Now That’s a Big Buddha

You should have seen the toe nail clippers. We have seen a lot of Buddhas on our trip. It isn’t uncommon to find 10,000 Buddhas in a single shrine or museum. We see them in stores, hotels and at the countless shrines we’ve passed or visited. It wouldn’t surprise me if we’ve seen upwards 100,000 on the trip so far. But yesterday, we saw a Buddha that stands out from the crowd. It’s official name is the Leshan Giant Buddha, but I like to call it mega-uber-Buddha. See... Read More

The People’s Park

Visiting the local park in China on a Saturday is a must for any visitor. But the People’s Park in Chengdu may be the “best” of all. Parks in Chinese cities, a country where space is at a premium, are used as practice space for everything. From singing and musical instrument playing, to calligraphy, to break-dancing, tai-chi, and ballroom dancing just to name a few. In Love With Red Pandas

You may think that there are panda’s running around China like squirrels at home, but you’d be flat out of luck to find any. Seriously. Your best bet is to visit them, like us, in Sichuan province in the city of Chengdu where there is a Panda Breeding Base. It’s not like we’ve never seen pandas before. There are pandas at the Smithsonian National Zoo in DC. In fact, the DC zoo is a partner of the Breeding Base in Chengdu so I assume that’s where the... Read More

How to Eat Sichuan Hot Pot

According to the guidebook, the Sichuan region is famous for spicy food cooked with Sichuan pepper. This special pepper numbs your mouth instead of burning it. It’s not for everyone, but we love it. Chongqing is the Sichuan hot pot capital of the world. We have a Sichuan restaurant at home, but we’d never had hot pot. When we arrived we put discovering hot pot at the top of list. We didn’t really know what we were getting ourselves into. We only had a rough idea... Read More

The Biggest City I’d Never Heard Of

As we planned our route through China, we discovered there was a city between Zhangjiajie and Chengdu called Chongqing. We wondered if it was worth stopping in so we checked our guidebook. It said it was famous for Hot Pot. Mmm, sounds tasty. Oh, and it was the biggest city in the world. Huh? Boasting 32 million people Chongqing may in fact be the most populous city in the world. There is apparently a fair amount of disagreement about how to accurately measure population which... Read More
